On Friday, students in Year 11 Industrial Technology visited Harrisons Joinery as part of an Industry Study on Timber Products and Furniture Technologies. The students were welcomed by proprietor Geoff Harrison and his team of highly skilled and enthusiastic staff, including our very own ex-student from Year 11 last year, Tori Dockett, who now works in the showroom and is undertaking a Business Administration Traineeship. Geoff Harrison showed students through the entire production process of residential and commercial joinery, and students were treated to valuable insights into the industry from Geoff’s wealth of experience and knowledge in running the business for nearly 40 years. Year 11 student Bonte Amani commented on how well-organised and thought out the production process was, and he, along with the other students were very impressed by the high quality of workmanship on display. Harrisons Joinery has been operating in Wagga for nearly 40 years, and have continually embraced new technologies and mechanised many processes to remain at the forefront of their trade. They have invested in automated CNC Routers, Edge-Banders and Post-Formers that students were able to observe in full operation. Student Hannah McDowell said she gained a new level of understanding about the various techniques, equipment and processes used to produce kitchens and commercial joinery, and she, along with the other students, asked very good questions throughout the visit to increase their learning. Rhys Beeche was impressed by the millions of dollars of machinery and equipment that was on display, and Will Carmichael admired the level of coordination that is required to ensure joinery installations were completed not only on-schedule but also in sync with so many other trades and services, such as plumbing, electrical, plastering, tiling and painting. Mr Forbes-Taber and his students were extremely grateful to the team at Harrisons Joinery for taking the time out of their very busy schedules to provide students with unparalleled learning experiences and look froward to ongoing partnerships with them for work placements and potential employment opportunities.
