Cattle team update

Monday 31 May, 2021 Final results are just through from Wingham Beef Week, an online event this year due to COVID-19 restrictions. Students farewelled the steers early one Sunday morning in mid May in icy conditions after having worked hard on the animals to get them into top shape for the competition. All the steers were placed in the same class after being assessed on their Hot Standard Carcass Weight (HSCW). The highest placing went to the Shorthorn steer Patch who placed fourth. Today the Cattle Team were back in action with the arrival of six new steers over the weekend. Each steer needed to be weighed and inducted using electronic ear tags to connect into the National Livestock Identification Scheme (NLIS) - a nationwide database system which keeps track of stock transfers allowing traceability and compliance. The team are looking forward to caring for the new steers, building them up ready for showing at the Hoof and Hook at the Royal Melbourne Show in September.
