Wednesday 9 June, 2021 We are Climate Warriors! With a foundational understanding that they can influence and care for God's creation, last week Mr Simon Spargo's Year 5/6 class were given a task: planning and building a house that can withstand bushfires. Students had to consider what they could do to help prevent or mitigate damage in the face of a natural disaster. NRMA and Craig Reucassel (War on Waste) have released a Minecraft game that is based upon natural disasters and climate change. The students used this game to plan building materials and layout as they designed a fire retardant house. "To help prevent a house being destroyed during a bushfire we chose different construction materials and added features to our designs such as sprinklers. Brick walls and metal fences and roofs are best in a fire situation. It is also important to keep the grass low surrounding the building." said Sienna. The level of engagement of the students in this task was significant. As a hands on creative task it helped to cement the learning the students had been digesting in Geography where they had been focusing on a sustainable earth.
