Furniture Making in Industrial Tech

June 2022 Industrial Technology Students in Years 9 and 10 are learning how to construct furniture using solid timber and veneer board. Students are constructing a Bookshelf Display Cabinet that will have a drawer with a curved front and a Laminated Solid Timber Benchtop. Students have learned to cut housing joints with a router and have recognised the importance of precision measuring and marking, as well as the use of jigs and templates for making the task of cutting the housings quicker and more accurate. Other processes students have used so far include: Machining timber edge strips to width and thickness using the Thicknesser Cutting timber to length using a Drop Saw Joining timber using the Festool Domino Jointer Most students are at the stage of gluing and assembling their carcasses and Mr Forbes-Taber has been pleased with how students have learned to use a hammer and nail punch correctly to drive their nails in straight! (…no thumbs were harmed in this process 😊)
