grand designs in 3c

TERM 2, 2022 Step aside Grand Designs, Class 3C are putting their scientific knowledge of material properties, their understanding of Australian geography and their imagination to work to design an Amazing Australian Home. The hush in the classroom gave a clue as to how seriously the students are taking their task. There is a lot to think about, starting with the location of the house. Students had to choose a location to live based on five well thought out considerations. For some the draw of family was important, for others it was the great playgrounds and for others the climate. You will be pleased to know that Wagga was by far the most sought after location! Once a bird's eye view (or a more contemporary take - 'a drone view') of the house was sketched out by the students a digital render of the design using the Homestyler program was developed. Students could then see their designs in 3D and add the detail of the interior design to really bring the design to life. Recent explorations into material properties in 3C's Science lessons has enabled students to make informed choices in their construction materials. Here are some of their choices: Scarlett "The outside of my house is going to have cement render over brick. I chose brick because it is strong." Mason "My walls will be concrete because I like the look of it, it is white and strong. I will also have glass so that I can see the views of Canberra. I chose to build my house in Canberra because there is lots to do there and there are good views of trees." Isla "My house will have hardwood on the outside, with brick. Inside the floors will be wooden." "It has been great to work with the students as they weigh up 'form versus function' in their designs. Their Science lessons where they have learnt about the properties of different materials has helped them to consider the function of the building not just how it looks." Mr David Chapman, Classroom Teacher, explains. As a foundation to the Amazing Home project 3C had undertaken a study of the different states of Australia in their Geography lessons. Here are some visual summaries of their findings.
