March 2022 Year 2 have enjoyed celebrating their learning about Australia! 2P and 2S savoured an afternoon tea sampling popular Australian foods featured in their focus book, Possum Magic, by Mem Fox. The classes sent invitations and responses back and forth to invite each other to the party. Students were involved in organising the party and created ‘Possum Magic’ themed bunting to mark the celebration. On the day, the classes enjoyed a shared reading of the book. Students then ‘travelled’ to the different Australian states and capital cities to collect food tokens, following the route of the possums around Australia in the narrative. The students swapped their tokens for a vegemite sandwich, Anzac biscuit, Minties, a piece of pavlova and a lamington! At the party, students gifted their invitee with a handmade party favour, an Australian animal mask. The students enjoyed sharing their love of literature and Australian geography together!
