Term 4, 2021 The 2S classroom has been transformed into a zoo, housing many wonderful animals from all parts of the globe! Inspired by their visit to Altina Wildlife Park, 2S students researched an animal of particular interest and designed and constructed a diorama of it's habitat. Students worked to a specific checklist to include a source of food, water and shelter in their diorama. The highlight for many students was making a felt puppet of their animal! Dioramas became the stimulus for much storybook reading and narrative writing featuring the animals. Students' narratives demonstrated their understandings of the plight of many animals in the wild, with story problems including the risk of predators and habitat loss. Students' writing shone with creative adjectives and onomatopoeia as they brought their habitat and animal to life! Student Reflections "I liked our activity because it was entertaining and interesting. I learnt to design and make a diorama of an alpaca's habitat." Isla "The best part was writing our stories because in my story, my African Wild Dog lost his habitat but found a new home. My story had a happy ending." Jonathan "I enjoyed making the puppets as you had to cut felt to make the animal's features. You had to think about what you were going to do." Angel "I love dogs, so I made the habitat of an African Wild Dog. The most challenging part was cutting the felt to make the animal." Beau "My favourite part of our activity was making my American Alligator because it was my first time making a puppet of this animal. I love the American Alligator!" Kirk "I liked researching and designing the habitat for my lion." Sarah "I enjoyed making the felt puppets because I liked using all the different materials to make my alpaca." Oliver "I enjoyed making the puppet because I liked researching the animal and making it out of felt." Quinn
