STEM CHALLENGES

“Cultivating the Next Generation of Project Leaders"

THE VALUE OF the ANNUAL COMPETITIONS

Significant growth in a students’ understanding of how the theories of science and maths apply in a practical setting reaches new heights in a competition setting. The College offers students from Year 5 upwards involvement in National and International competitions which stretch knowledge, skill base and confidence working through and with new technologies.

The College participates in annual competitions which are aimed at inspiring and educating our students in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Many of the programs and challenges are organised by the REA Foundation, a social enterprise which aims to raise up young people to re-engineer our nation. In conjunction with similar international organisations, the Australian Department of Defence, government and education bodies REA provides opportunities for schools to take part in:

.

The College has a strong history of competing in these challenges, winning National titles in 2020 and 2022 in both the SUBS in Schools and the 4x4 in Schools Technology Challenges, and there has been an exponential growth in the number of students from the College participating in these challenges. Team based and offering students the opportunity to learn new skills in real-world technology such as 3D CAD/CAM/CAE engineering design software, coding, computational fluid dynamics and finite element analysis, the competition also grows the widely applied skills of problem solving, project management, communication, presentation, teamwork, innovation, self-promotion, collaboration, marketing and entrepreneurialism.

In all the competitions students are required to connect and collaborate with external sponsors and mentors, as well as present comprehensive portfolios which detail their designs, process, marketing and community connection.

Participation in these programs result in a growth in skills and confidence but also develop a close-knit bond between students across year groups, as they learn to communicate and work together for a common goal.
