Week 8 term 1, 2024
Year 5 with Mrs Mannion have been learning about transportation to Australia and the Colony for HSIE. They christened the ship built by Miss Cindy and named it 'The Charlotte', one of the First Fleet ships. They researched three significant people on board The Charlotte: Mary Bryant - convict and escapee! John White, the ship's surgeon and botanist, and James Bloodsworth - convict and bricklayer who went on to build Sydney Parliament House.
Students researched how people lived in the Colony and made things to showcase that period of time including fashion, games, diary entries and food. They have also identified the impacts colonisation has had on Australia's Indigenous population. QR codes are scattered around the displays that play recorded information which 5M and parents have enjoyed listening to.
The class is now researching internal Australian explorers in small groups and will present their findings through interactive booklets and infographics
